DIVING: Full Of Confidence

Bryan insists he’ll be firing on all cylinders at London Olympics
Bryan Nickson Lomas
BRYAN Nickson Lomas must be at the very top of his game if he hopes to claim the country's first Olympic medal in diving at next year's London Olympics.

The 21-year-old, however, feels he is getting closer to achieving his target after a breakthrough performance at last month's Sea Games, where he breached the 500-point mark for the first time.

Bryan's gold medal score of 500.80 points would have earned him a spot in the final of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Kuching-born will compete in his third Olympic Games in London, where he has so far qualified for the 10m platform and 3m springboard individual disciplines.

"I've finally breached the 500-point mark but I must continue to improve for an Olympic medal," said Bryan yesterday.

"I need to be consistent with my dives as I am determined to reach at least one final in London.

"It is anyone's title once in the final but of course, China are the favourites in diving.

"Hopefully, my training in China in the coming months will help me improve my performance. I need to work on my entries, which have let me down in major competitions."

Bryan is also hoping to qualify for his third Olympic event at the Diving World Cup on Feb 20-26 in London.

"(Yeoh) Ken Nee and I are hoping to earn an Olympic spot in the 3m springboard synchro. Of course, it will not be easy as only four spots will be available.

"If we do make it, we would make history as the first Malaysian pair to qualify for an Olympic synchro event. Our focus will be in this event as both of us have qualified for the Olympics in individual events," he said.

Bryan earned his Olympic ticket in the 3m springboard in July's World Championships in Shanghai before qualifying in the 10m platform at the Diving Asia Cup in October.

Ken Nee and Pandelela Rinong also earned Olympic spots in the men's 3m springboard and the women's 10m platform, respectively.
